About Me...
For the first 25 years of my drinking, alcohol was my best friend.

I was very shy and alcohol allowed me to do things I couldn’t otherwise do. It actually helped my career because presentations and public speaking terrified me.

For those first 25 I was able to manage alcohol. For the last five, alcohol managed me.

It culminated with me sleeping with a 2 Liter bottle of vodka next to the bed. I drank every waking moment.

Everything I accomplished in my life I destroyed with alcohol. I couldn’t live with alcohol, or without it.

In the last seven months of my drinking I was Baker Acted, Marchman Acted and went to treatment three times.

Following my first treatment I stayed sober five days. I got drunk on my way home from my second treatment. Alcohol controlled me completely.

When I got home from treatment the second time, my family was gone and my house was virtually empty. I didn’t react like a normal person. I thought “I’ve won the lottery. Now I can drink whenever I want, with no one to stop me.” That’s what I did.
Six weeks later, having consumed vodka day and night, chased with a small bag of M & M peanuts about every third day, I had lost 65 pounds. I had also lost all my toe nails and my skin was yellow.
I was slowly killing myself, although I didn’t know it.
At this point I had a moment of clarity and decided, “okay, I’m done. I’m going to go to treatment now because I want to, not because I’m being forced to go.” This was the beginning of my sober journey.

In treatment I learned that I was spiritually bankrupt and that I was going to die if I didn’t find some form of a higher power. I was desperate and I found out that desperation was a gift. It caused a level of willingness in me that I would normally not have.

I began to do the things I was told would keep me sober. This included daily sober disciplines they called Toothbrush Therapy, five things I do every day to stay sober.

Seventeen-plus years later, I’m still doing those things.
My life has been nothing short of magical since I’ve been sober.

I took three years to decide what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I decided I thought I would make a good therapist. At 48 I went back to school and got a dual Master’s Degree in Rehab Counseling and Mental Health. Following a challenge from a professor, I decided to go after a doctorate degree, which I earned in 2015.

In the last 12 years I’ve been an Intern, a Therapist, a Clinical Director, a Program Director, a Chief Operating Officer and a CEO in the substance treatment industry. I’ve opened and operated several treatment centers.

Although the track of my career in this industry would show an executive track, I still love working with individuals. I find I still get a great thrill from seeing the lightbulb go on in someone’s eyes when they start to really understand what it takes to get and stay sober.

I’ve been able to help thousands of people during that time and it’s been the most rewarding time in my life. Today I love working with the families of individuals struggling with substance use disorders and the individuals themselves. It helps to “keep it green” for me.

I can still clearly remember my first day in treatment and I have great empathy for those going through the struggles that once consumed my life. Sobriety is not only possible, but once you are able to achieve it your life will be better than ever.
